On page SEO

If you have read my post The only way to win at SEO, you will see that I don’t regard on page SEO as a particularly sophisticated SEO strategy. Not to say it’s not important, it’s extremely important but it’s generally no longer going to be enough to get you onto the front page for a high traffic keyword.

In this post I will go through the basics of what we do for on-page optimisation. Note I haven’t included general coding techniques in here but it’s worth mentioning that Google likes well coded web pages and doesn’t particularly love old school coding like loads of tables and Flash.

First off – Google Analytics

The first step here is to look at what keywords are bringing you traffic at the moment. Google Analytics is what we use for this so hopefully it’s installed but if it’s not, install it now and use your current stats package to look at the keyword data (AWStats is often installed on hosting accounts by default).

The last thing we want to do is have our on page SEO changes reduce traffic that is coming from Google already so if there are keywords that are currently bringing you traffic then you have to make sure you don’t undo any onsite work that has been done for these. Read More…

8 Myths about Google (and SEO)

I’m currently working on a presentation on ‘Understanding Google’ and as part of it I’ve covered 8 myths about Google so I thought it made sense to go into some more detail in a blog post.

Some of these things were true a few years ago but as Google has become more sophisticated they are no longer true.

Some of them have never been true and will never be true.

Putting keywords in your meta tags will improve ranking

Back when search engines were first invented, putting keywords in your meta tags (tags that are visible to search engines but not immediately visible to humans) was one way of increasing your position in the search engine. Obviously this sort of thing  is way to easy to abuse and Google worked this out pretty early on.
These days meta tags have no influence over your ranking in Google (note the meta description tag should still be used as it’s words will often be used for the site description in Google’s results but it won’t be used to determine rank).

The only way to win at SEO (part 1)

As a small business owner I bet you have heard it all when it comes to being ranked in Google.

“Put your keywords in your title and headings”

“Just create lots of great content and Google will love you for it”

“Get loads of backlinks”

The truth is, there is 1 and only 1 way you can possibly rank on the front page in Google (we are talking about natural listings here if you don’t know the difference between paid and natural listings start here).

By the end of this 2 part article you will know what that is and you will be able to make a start towards making it happen.

First it’s important to know what Google wants.

What Google wants

If you are a small business owner trying to make sense of the hazy mess of SEO advice out there start with this one simple piece of information

“The front page of Google for your keyword will be filled with the results that Google decides have the most authority for that keyword”

This will make more sense as I go so with that in mind let’s move on for now.

SEO Strategies – The 5 levels of sophistication

Next it’s important to understand that there are a lot of ways of going about ranking in Google (called SEO from now on) and they vary in terms of their level of sophistication. Some of them do not work and will never work anymore (like adding keywords to your meta tags). I will focus here on the methods that do work, including doing nothing.

I think it’s helpful to group them visually into 5 levels as I have done here. Read More…
