4 ways to boost your Google Places ranking

In the first part of Google Places Optimisation I covered keyword choice and strategy in detail. In this final part I’m going to address 4 specific things you can do to help boost your places listing in the rankings.

Make your listing complete

Of course this assumes you already have a listing. You may find even if you haven’t set one up in Google there is one there already (as it pulls data from other places like yellow pages). If that is the case then visit Google Places and find your listing and ‘claim’ it.

Google likes to see a listing that is complete. This means that any time Google asks for some information then provide it (absolutely every field). Here is a screenshot of a complete listing for our wedding videos case study.

Is this the easiest way to get free traffic?

My Long tail SEO Strategy

I have spoken about my different SEO strategies before and I’ve also talked about long tail keywords. In this post however I’m going to go into specific detail about what I do to get long tail SEO traffic.

If you have a site that has some authority and you are prepared to create some content then this would have to be one of the easiest ways to get free traffic.

The power of long tail keywords

Let’s start by looking at some analytics data for my own site (this one). My site ranks extremely well in Google for very high traffic keywords like ‘website design’ (1st) ‘website development’ (1st) ‘web design’ (7th) etc. These 3 terms alone get almost 30,000 exact match searches in Google Australia each month!

You would expect then that this is where I get most of my traffic from. Here is a slimmed down screenshot from Google Analytics.

Getting started with social media for SEO

If you have read any of my ebooks, particularly my small business search engine domination ebook you will know I am a big advocate of social media for SEO benefits.

The main reason is simple. The Google algorithm is based to a large extent on sites linking to other sites. But other than SEO companies who really links to other sites anymore? Most people will use social media to ‘share’ as opposed to actively linking to another site from their highly authoritative homepage.

The hard data on how social media impacts on SEO is pretty limited. However it’s my belief that in the future things like social media authority and authorship (how important Google thinks you are as an author) will have a huge influence on your position in Google. At the end of the day Google wants to deliver the best content and the best content is written by people with authority and is shared a lot.

SEO case study month 0 – Keyword choice and on page SEO

A month ago we started our SEO case study for amber teething necklace and amber beads suppliers Flower Child. In this update post I will outline the basic strategy in terms of keyword choice and on page SEO.

Keyword choice

There are a lot of keyword tools out there, I find the Google Keyword tool sufficient in most cases. My simplified strategy with choosing keyword is:

  1. Choose a keyword that is likely to bring customers (note traffic doesn’t necessarily mean customers)
  2. Choose one that we have some chance of ranking for.

Basically we look at Analytics data to see what terms have brought them traffic in the past, look for terms that would likely be searched for by a potential customer, look at where we are currently ranking and then go to the Google Keyword tool and work out how many searches the keyword is getting. The screenshot below shows the results after I put in some keywords. Click on the image to see the whole picture.

What we liked about them is that they were well established in their industry, showed a good commitment to content creation (blog) and social media (Facebook) and online networking. This is the sort of stuff that really helps with the search engines and it can’t be easily outsourced.

We haven’t defined exactly what we will be doing yet but we’ll be using them as an SEO case study on the blog so keep an eye on it to see how an SEO program works and what results to expect.

If you have any questions about what we are doing feel free to comment here and stay tuned for the updates.
