Image formats – know the difference

website design - dan Hi all, this week we welcome small business owner and consultant David Moloney. David looks after small business planned, check that out as well there are some great articles and posts on there all about small business. Please feel free to comment if you want to ask David any questions about the formats. Thanks David.

Have you ever been confused by an image file extension? There are JPGs, GIFs, PNGs and TIFFS. Surely they’re just the same thing repackaged, right?

Well no. Don’t make the mistake that many amateur website owners make. By taking a moment to understand the difference between a JPG, GIF, TIFF, PNG and EPS, you’ll ensure your pictures remain crisp, fast to load and represent your website with confidence.

In short, each image format makes tradeoffs between file size, number of featured colours and browser compatibility.

Here’s a video where I run through the differences between the JPG, GIF, TIFF, PNG and EPS image file types. An explanation of the points I make can also be found below the video.

For a full analysis of the different images please see the comments below.

Bite Me!

Before you even put a morsel of food on your tongue, apparently you taste it with your eyes first. Thank you very much for that delightful piece of information MasterChef! So if we are eating our food with our eyes, then your photos on your website are a little taste-test teaser of what your potential clients are planning on consuming through your business.

Stock image library recommendations

We thought it would be useful to keep a list of image libraries that we use so clients can check them out if they are ever thinking about adding stock images to their sites. We will keep this update as we change our preferences but at the moment they are in a general order of how much we use them.

We have ordered these from the cheapest (free) to the most expensive.

Google Image Search

Most of these images aren’t royalty free but you can search by license and you might find the occasional decent image that is labeled for reuse.

Flickr.com

Again you can specifically search for photos that are released under the ‘Creative Commons‘ license and use them if you give the owner credit.

Sxc.hu

This site offers more affordable (some free) but images are generally of a lesser quality.

Tommy Shultz Digital Photography Classes

This isn’t a stock library but these images are so awesome and Tommy is making them available for free. They are generally related to surf / travel etc. Really awesome stuff here. Sign up here to download 450+ photos.

Dreamstime.com

This is where we get most of our images from. The images are affordable and they have a large number of good quality images.

Istockphoto.com

This is a similar site however the quality is arguably a big higher as are their prices.

Jupiterimages.com

Offers higher quality more expensive images.

GettyImages.com

Offers very expensive, high quality images not all of which are royalty free.
