Back in 2006 when I started my web design business, I did so with no experience, no customers, no money and no clue about how to build websites. For my first attempt at a dynamic website I bought a book on ASP programming and built my own simple content management system (CMS). It was painful! It took about 2 months and cost about $10,000.
Today we launched a dynamic, CMS-based website for Milestone Builders. It took us 1 day to build. And it cost $299.
In 2006 building a website was a pretty technical skill. In fact you pretty much had to hand it to a web developer to do for you.
Open source systems hadn’t really taken off yet. Most web developers were custom programming their own websites. If they used a CMS at all, it would generally be one they had built themselves. Either way it was virtually impossible to build a website unless you were a programming geek.
Therefore not many businesses had a website and it was an opportunity in itself just to be online.
