SEO case study month 2 – Number 1 in Google – revenue doubled

In my previous posts on this SEO case study I covered the keyword research and the on page SEO techniques (see month 0) as well as the link building techniques (month 1).

This post is really just an update on results. After 2 months we have gone from 32 (4th page) to number 1 in Google for the keyword Amber Teething Necklace.

In addition we have gone from 8th to 4th for amber beads (this has only been a few weeks of SEO for this term).

All of this starts to mean something when we look at traffic and revenue data.

4 figure increase in overall organic search engine traffic

Note this is the Christmas period so some increase would be attributed to additional Christmas traffic however consider whether or not they would have received any of this traffic if they had been on page 4 still.

Here is a chart showing the overall % change in organic search traffic (free traffic) from Google from before we started vs now.

SEO case study month 1 – Link building and other tactics

It has now been 1 month since we started the SEO work for Flower Child.

In the month 0 SEO case study post I covered keyword choice, on page SEO and some quotes from the client.

In this post I will run through the results so far and some of our link building tactics.

Results so far

In 4 weeks we have made it to the front page going from 31st to 5th which is pretty cool. Importantly however we are getting more traffic for the term. In fact while the actual traffic numbers are fairly low (I won’t reveal them here) the percentage improvement from week 1 to week 4 for the term is a whopping 280%!

It’s early days so we’ll continue to monitor the traffic and the numbers will get more reliable the longer we monitor it.

Existing link analysis

The existing link analysis is about finding out who is linking to you already and maximising those links. For example you might have one of your suppliers link to you with your business name as the anchor text. Just getting them to change this anchor text to the keyword you are chasing can make a big difference.

Theere are many ways to check backlinks but my basic steps are to:

  1. Use a tool like Linkdiagnosis.com (free) or SEO spy glass (paid) to obtain a list of all sites linking to yours.
  2. Sort the links by Google page rank (PR) that are ‘do follow’ (do follow means they count towards your Google authority). Basically the idea here is to not worry too much about the low level links going through to your site but focus on the high level ones. Google PR isn’t the be all and end all in page measures so if you have a better one then use that but the point is that if you have a lot of links you don’t have time to look at all of them.
  3. If the link looks like one that you might be able to contact the site owner and change then do so.

Note you can also use Yahoo Site Explorer or the free version of Open Site Explorer however these tools won’t let you sort the links based on the value of the link so if you have lots of links then this won’t really work.

In the case of Flower Child, I’m not sure they were able to change too many of the links however there were a few key ones (like forum signatures) which can make a big difference. Read More…

SEO case study month 0 – Keyword choice and on page SEO

A month ago we started our SEO case study for amber teething necklace and amber beads suppliers Flower Child. In this update post I will outline the basic strategy in terms of keyword choice and on page SEO.

Keyword choice

There are a lot of keyword tools out there, I find the Google Keyword tool sufficient in most cases. My simplified strategy with choosing keyword is:

  1. Choose a keyword that is likely to bring customers (note traffic doesn’t necessarily mean customers)
  2. Choose one that we have some chance of ranking for.

Basically we look at Analytics data to see what terms have brought them traffic in the past, look for terms that would likely be searched for by a potential customer, look at where we are currently ranking and then go to the Google Keyword tool and work out how many searches the keyword is getting. The screenshot below shows the results after I put in some keywords. Click on the image to see the whole picture.

What we liked about them is that they were well established in their industry, showed a good commitment to content creation (blog) and social media (Facebook) and online networking. This is the sort of stuff that really helps with the search engines and it can’t be easily outsourced.

We haven’t defined exactly what we will be doing yet but we’ll be using them as an SEO case study on the blog so keep an eye on it to see how an SEO program works and what results to expect.

If you have any questions about what we are doing feel free to comment here and stay tuned for the updates.
